My name is Akiko Omori (Aki) and I created the Superkitty character. I am originally from Japan and I have lived in the USA (Rhode Island) since 1989. I work as an artist, making pottery. I am also the mother of the two best kitties in the world! (Willy and Sunshine), and my former cat, Gizmo, taught me the beauty and wonder of cats and all animals.
I created Superkitty as a fun character to put on my pottery.
When the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, and then the radiation and evacuations happened, I was extremely saddened and overwhelmed. Soon I began to see news not only about all the people of my country, but also about the animals and pets that had been left behind in the evacuation area. People had been asked to leave their homes very suddenly, and they were not allowed to take their pets and animals! So the animals were starving and dying, some of them still on chains or wandering. Fortunately, there was also news of incredible people and organizations that were working to save and help these animals.
I then had the idea that maybe I could give real meaning to Superkitty in order to get people to hear about the the plight of these animals in Japan. I thought to myself, “what if I could use Superkitty as a symbol to raise awareness and raise funds for this cause?”
So here it is! Superkitty… to the rescue!
Right now Superkitty will be focused on Japan, but my hope is that in the future Superkitty can help to raise awareness and funds for animals in disasters around the world. I plan to continue to add links and ideas to this website, so I hope you will come back, and also that you will give me your ideas.
For now there are 2 ways that you and Superkitty can help with animal rescue in Japan:
1) See the Links page on the website.
You can learn about and donate to any of these organizations directly.
2) I've made some Superkitty T-Shirts.
You can buy one if you want, and I'll donate 100% of the profits to one of these organizations. See the T-Shirts page for more details.
